Slower Marathon Times lead to Higher Costs

Tuesday, November 3rd, 2009

The Biz Runner wrote about an article in the New York Times named, “Plodders Have a Place, but Is It in a Marathon?”  The article brings up the fact that Marathon times have become higher, which has diluted the accomplishment of finishing a marathon for all runners, no matter what time they finish with.  They have said that slow runners have disrespected the distance and have ruined the marathon’s mystique.  Here’s a solution, if you think running a marathon isn’t as big of an accomplishment anymore, run a 50K.  Problem solved.

large-start-runners-in-marathon

Actually, not problem solved.  Chris Burch, race director of the Des Moines Marathon told the New York Times, “For every race director, there’s a very fine line between putting on a community event and putting on a race.”  Marathons take a lot of capital to be run successfully; therefore, you have to appeal to all types of runners, both the racers and community runners.  So how do you make a race attractive to all runners while not diluting the accomplishment for the more experienced runners?

The Berlin Marathon solution is to put the responsibility of finishing the race on their entrants.  They tell them before they sign up that they must run the race at a minimum pace.  Then during the race, the Berlin Marathon sends out a team running at that pace.  Anyone that falls behind that team will be asked to leave the race course.  This solves both problems, you get the entry fees of the slower runners, while enforcing the measure of accomplishment for finishing your event.

The Biz Runner pointed out that the longer runners are on the course, the more costs incurred to race directors for police on the streets, race workers, to pay the city to close the streets for the race, which can be the largest fixed cost to race directors, and much more.  His solution is to incrementally increase marathon runners entry fee based on time; going as far as to suggest billing your credit card based on your official finishing time.  But at what time do you start increasing fees?  He suggested the Oprah line; to increase fees incrementally starting at Oprah’s finish of 4:29:15 in the Marine Corps marathon in 1994.  The Oprah line is set at 4:30:00.  Are you above or below the Oprah line?

511winfrey22_20010627_25159.jpg

While the Oprah line may be a great way to make a goal time, it may not be the best way to charge slower runners higher fees.  If race directors increased fees based on performance, I believe it should be more standardized and mitigated for race conditions.  Also, there should be a flat fee in order to be fair, letting runners know exactly what costs they may incur from running at a slower pace.  This can be done very easily using a bell shaped curve.  Race directors can take the mean marathon race time, then take two standard deviations to the right of the mean in order to encompass the top 97.7% finishing times of their marathon participants.  The bottom 2.3% of runners are often outliers in which the variable cost incurred from each minute slower is exponential.  A race director could be paying for 2-3 extra hours of race time for only 2.3% of all participants!  These runners should be asked to pay a higher entry fee to pay for this extra cost, instead of it being covered with all runners race fees, no matter how long they use the race course.  Also, by charging these runners more, less of them will elect to run the race unless they are serious about it, making the accomplishment of finishing your race more desirable.  Of course, you will always have 2.3% of your customers unhappy that they have to pay extra to run your race, but they are the ones using your product, a marathon race, more than the others customers.

Runners are runners and all should be able to try to reach a goal of finishing a marathon; however, some may need to re-think signing up for a large, expensive marathon if their time is in the bottom 2.3% of all runners.  They should try running 26.2 miles on their own first to see if they fall in that lower category of runners.  You don’t need a race to accomplish your goal of running a marathon.

Recently we wrote about Kristin Bourdon who challenged herself to run everyday for a full year!  We initially spoke with her on day 270 of her goal.  She told us about how she would be grumpy and irritable if she didn’t run and knew that she needed to make it a priority in her everyday life.  So instead of trying to fit running in, she made it a priority.  The question became not if, but when, she was going to fit her run in.  Well, apparently what she did worked!  Two days ago Kristin finished running for 365 consecutive days!  You can read more about her story in our initial interviews:  article one and article two.  Congratulations Kristin!  We’re so proud of you accomplishing your goal and inspiring all of us to run!

If you have an inspirational story you would like to share with us, please feel free to contact us at info@seriousrunning.com.  We’d love to share your story to inspire other runners to keep pushing to reach their goals too!

Are Runners More Attractive People?

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009

sexy-guy-in-front-of-fireplace

Of course they are.  Just look at this sexy picture of me.  You don’t look like that not being a runner.  Runners are more fit than the general population; therefore they have more attractive bodies.  However, there are many other things that determine how attractive people are other than body shape.  So are runners really attractive?

Most fair skinned people want to be more tan.  Runners do it outside, so they are more susceptible to the sun and darkening their hue.  Therefore, fair skinned runners become more attractive than the general fair-skinned population.  Being fair is so not hot.

Runners often shower more than non-runners.  I’m predominantly an evening runner so I have to shower twice a day.  I haven’t seen any negative effects to my skin but studies have shown that the more you wash your hair the more likely it is to become weak or frayed.  Runners run the risk of having less attractive hair.  At least our skin is silky smooth though!  Oh yeah.

Running is a great stress reliever which usually gives runners a better attitude and outlook on life than the non-running population.  Attitude and a positive outlook can be very important to attraction.  It’s like Vincent Vega in ‘Pulp Fiction’ says when asked why he doesn’t eat pig, “Pig’s a filthy animal. I don’t dig on filthy animals.”  Jules Winnfield, “Dog’s a filthy animal.”  Vincent Vega, “Dogs got a personality.  Personality goes a long way.”  Well there you have it.  Runner’s can be filthy and still be attractive.  Forget about showering twice a day!

Runners are usually people that like to set goals and strive to accomplish them.  You know what other types of people set goals and work hard to accomplish them?  Successful people.  Success is so hot.  Just look at Donald Trump and then look at his wife.  Exactly.

So if you want to become more attractive then start running.  Or just sit provocatively in front of a fireplace like I do.  60% of the time it works all the time.  Oh yeah.

Edward Norton to Run a NYC Marathon

Friday, September 11th, 2009

ed-norton-x

That’s Edward Norton jacked up in “American History X.”  Edward Norton has gone from skinny to muscular and then back to skinny a number of times.  It’s tough being a famous Hollywood actor.  Now he’s taking on something more difficult, running the New York City Marathon.  Anyone can make millions of dollars acting like they are someone else, but how many people can say they’ve run a marathon?  Only really cool people.

In the article with CNN, Edward said that he wanted to be in better shape for his 40th birthday than he was on his 30th birthday.  No small feat for someone who is always in great shape.  So he decided that running a marathon was the best way to measure his fitness level.  I agree.  I’ve lifted weights intensely once for about a year and was able to bench over 300 pounds, but I never felt as fit as I do from running.  Running a marathon is a great way to measure your endurance and put your body to the test.  I hope you pass, Ed.

Another reason Edward Norton is running the New York Marathon is to benefit the Maasi Wilderness Conservation Trust protecting the land of the Maasi tribe.  In order to prepare for the Marathon, Edward went to Africa to train with this African tribe famous for its runners.  I’m sure it was an amazing experience.  Not only did Edward get to do experience this life changing event, but he is also raising money for charity.  Way to leverage your celebrity Edward Norton.

Now I just need to figure out how to leverage my Internet celebrity status…

Jeff Galloway on Running…a Business (2 of 2)

Wednesday, August 26th, 2009

jeff-galloway-runner

In 1975 Jeff Galloway started his first running training camp, starting with Lake Tahoe, California.  Jeff says, “I just wanted an excuse to go train out in Tahoe.”  This excuse grew into the extensive network of training groups and retreats all across the United States which Jeff still conducts today.  He also has expanded these retreats Internationally to Greece and soon to Japan, for a total of 90 Galloway training events a year.  Typically Jeff will conduct 5-hour schools in each city where he will go over individuals’ form and give initial evaluations.  From there, runners contact Jeff via email as he monitors their progress and alters their training schedules based off performance and how they are feeling during the training plan.  So how does Jeff have to the time to do all this?  He constantly works.  He said, “I answer every email sent to me, it may be 2 months before you get a response, but I’ll answer it.”  Jeff estimates he responds to about 100 runner’s questions a day!  This may take a lot of work, but this is what Jeff attributes his business success to, helping people and making connections.  Jeff always wanted to help people and improve their quality of life and is at heart a teacher.  Because of this, he talks to a lot of people which has helped his business.  Jeff says, “The best marketing is word of mouth.”  Another marketing technique of Jeff Galloway’s ventures is event driven, like the event happening at his store Phidippides at Ansley Mall in Atlanta, GA, this Saturday where you can get a chance to run with and speak with Jeff Galloway himself!  An free event like that is sure to create some buzz!

Jeff also said that from listening and working with so many different types of runners he is able to improve his expertise in running.  Someone who has helped train over 250,000 people has probably seen it all, but that doesn’t stop Jeff Galloway from continuing to learn and modify his training plans.  When asked what is greatest accomplishment has been he didn’t say winning the first Peachtree Road Race or running the Olympic games, he said,”Helping so many people and being able to hear from them.”  Jeff is amazed at how strong running has gotten and that people who are out of shape are taking up running, and some with his help are running marathons!  Something he never imagined would ever be possible!  However, I think the running boom of the early 1980s is something he helped make possible from the word of mouth buzz he created from his shoes stores to his books to his training programs.  Jeff Galloway has positively touched many people’s lives throughout his business career and continues to do it today.  Why?  Because he enjoys helping people.  Probably the best strategic business plan ever.

SkirtChaser Denver, Saturday August 29th

skirtchaser-black-150x100

The SkirtChaser are coming to Denver!  That’s right fellas, get ready to chase some skirts.  SkirtChaser Denver is a part of Skirt Sports SkirtChaser race series.  When Nicole DeBoom developed Skirt Sports, the first ever running skirt, she always had in mind to do a race series in conjunction with her product with the same message:  look good, feel good, perform better.  Work hard and play hard.  This is what the SkirtChaser race series is all about.  Feeling good and playing hard.

finishline-of-5k-running-race

The SkirtChaser race is different from your normal 5K.  All of the women participants are given a Skirt Sports skirt to wear and line up at the starting line before the men.  It’s always ladies first at SkirtChaser races, as it should be.  The women start the race as the men wait at the start line, watching the sea of women run away from them.  Kind of like your typical Saturday night.  Only this time you still have a chance to catch the women.  Three minutes after the women’s start the men are released.  If you think 3 minutes is a long head start, it’s not as long as you think.  When I ran the Skirt Chaser – Raleigh I was able to catch 355 skirts and only 20 eluded me.  That’s a lot better ratio than a normal Saturday night!  I was even injured at the time.  So why was I able to catch so many skirts?  Most likely because I have mad skirt chasing skills, so don’t expect the same results.  Currently the standings for Skirt Chaser race winners are Girls – 7 Guys – 3.  Apparently a 3 minute head start is pretty fair.  First person across the line, male or female, receives 500 dollars!

afterparty-at-5k-race

A great reason to run this fun 5K race is the block party after the race.  Runners over 21 receive two free beers from Oskar Blues Brewery to replace their carbs.  The post race block party has happy hour style food and drinks, dating games, and fashion show.  The block party goes from 5:15 to 8:00, a perfect time to relax, have fun, and meet some new friends.  Skirt Chaser makes it easy to meet new friends by giving out stickers for the single men and women to wear to signify them being single.  It’s a efficient system aimed at getting more participants to socialize.  From the website, “…you may just meet your future spouse!”  I have always wanted to date a runner.  Even if you already have a spouse, the event is a great time with live music entertainment, a sexy fashion show, and a hilarious awards ceremony with awards in categories such as “most likely to make out at the water station.”  I’m not sure what you have to do to qualify for that one.

after-running-drinking

You want to run this 5K race, no matter what your ability level, sex, or marital status is.  It’s fun for everyone!  Entry fees start at $35 but you can upgrade in order to get some great deals on T-shirts, skirts, shorts, and visor.  Whatever race package fits you best.  Procrastination fees start after Aug 9th at a $7 increase, registration closes on August 26th.  A $10 procrastination fee is added to race day entries.

Stop procrastinating on love and run the SkirtChaser 5K – Denver.  Your mother will be happy.

Tri Slide for Chaffing, Blisters, and Irritation from Running

Tuesday, August 4th, 2009

trislide_small_thumb

To the tune of the Soul Glow commercial from the movie “Coming to America:”

“Girl, you can be all the things you’ve, always wanted; beautiful, sexy, lubricated, as easy as 1-2-3.  Just let your Tri Slide.  Just let it slide on through.  Just let your Triiiiiiiiiiii Slide baby, feel oh so silky smooth, just let it slide on through.  Just let your Triiiiii Slide yeah!”

Don’t you want to feel silky smooth and be all the things you want to be.  Of course, so try Tri Slide.  Personally, I don’t do Triathlons but I do need to slide sometimes, that’s why I decided to check out Tri Slide.  The reason Tri Slide is great for triathlon participants is because it is great for the transition from water to land, like a hovercraft.  You don’t lose precious moments in the transition out of the wetsuit.  It slides off easy!  I’ve done a good bit of surfing in wetsuits so I know how difficult it is to take them off, usually having to turn them inside out and contour your body in unattractive positions.  With Tri Slide you don’t have be unattractive.  Also, remember, don’t throw your wetsuit in the back of your car and then straight to your closet all folded up.  Hang it up and let it dry.  Like a native Northern Californian surfer once told me about wetsuits, “They remember things.”  The great thing about Tri Slide is that you can put it on before the race starts because it stays on in the water in the water!  I know what you are thinking, if it doesn’t come off in water then how do I wash it off?  Simple, soap and water.  You should try that combination sometime, it may change your life.

Like I said, I don’t have to get out of wetsuits quickly, but I do chaff and get blisters from running long distances.  If you are going for a long run I suggest applying some Tri Slide to your body.  No, don’t spray it all over your body, that’s just weird.  Apply it to the spots that get a lot of rubbing.  If you need to know where to apply it, go for a long run in your normal shoes, shorts , and shirt and see where your hotspots are after your run, then apply it to those areas before your next long run.  Apply lubricant to hotspots.  See, isn’t that easy to remember?  It’s just that simple.  The environmentally friendly aerosol spray of  Tri Slide also makes it easy to target these areas too.  Target your hotspots and let your Triiiiii Slide; sliiiiiiiide on through!

Running is Universal

Monday, August 3rd, 2009

Running is Universal.  Even Neil Armstrong jogged on the moon, on the farthest portion of the Universe that man has ever traveled.  Now that’s Universal.  However, when I say running is Universal I am talking about the fact that it bridges any gaps between culture, ethnicity, and race.  Every person on the planet runs.  Why is this?

5k-running-race-start-line

Easy to Do: You don’t need special equipment to go running.  You don’t even have to have running shoes, many people run barefoot!   Without the need for special equipment, any society can participate in the sport.  From third world nations to developed countries.  Tangent:  I’ve always wondered, what are the requirements and what is an example of a second world country?  At any rate, the little need for capital and resources to participate in the sport makes it popular and Universal, much like soccer.  All you need is a ball to play soccer, that’s why it is the World’s largest sport.  Other sports like baseball, basketball, and football that are more popular in the United States because we have always had the resources to play other sports.  You ask then, why is soccer so popular in Europe?  I don’t know, because Europeans aren’t good with their hands?  Pablo Picasso who?

Natural: Everyone has been running since they were 2 years old.  From a very young age everyone runs away from the opposite sex, runs to the dinner table, and runs during a game of tag.  In fact, the game of tag is almost as Universal as running.  The point is, every person crawls, walks, and then runs.  Every human being.  You can’t get much more Universal than that.

Made to Run: No matter what race or cultural background you come from, we are all humans and human beings were made to run.  Humans were built to track their prey for long distances by running along side them until the prey became tired, then the humans would attack.  Humans; outsmarting prey since 4000 B.C.

Everyone has a Brain: Believe it or not, everyone has a brain and the positive reinforcement we get from running is the same for every individual.  Granted, how people react to running can differ, but everyone gets the same physiological results from running.  Everyone with a brain has endorphins that get released when running, resulting in a positive feeling.  We all like positive feelings.

It’s Difficult: Running is hard.  No matter how fast you are or how far you can run, running is difficult.  You get tired, you sweat, you have to push yourself.  People who experience the same kind of adversity brings them closer.  Making a Universal bond to share from running.

So enjoy the Universe with all types of people and run together.  Heal the world, make it a better place, for me and for you, and the entire human race…with running!

Why You Should Run in the Evenings

Friday, July 24th, 2009

I asked the question on twitter, “Do you prefer to run in the mornings or the evenings?” and I got a lot of great responses.  95% of runners said that they liked to run in the mornings because that way they know they can fit it in their day.  @Josiegal44 said:  “I love early morning runs right before the sun comes up. So peaceful before the day gets screwed up.” Makes sense, but I mitigate that by being an excellent planner.  Another reason @TheRealLance pointed to: “mornings! For me my legs feel like a ton of bricks in the evening (they consistently feel great in the morning).”  I disagree, my legs are loose and ready to go at the end of the day.  My man @Scis30 said: “evenings. Something to look forward to all day (most of the time).”  The lone runner who said he likes running in the evenings. This ones for you Scis30.   Since everyone apparently already runs in the morning I’m going to key you in on some benefits to running in the evening.  That’s what we’re here for, for you to learn from…and maybe entertain.

sunset-in-iraq

Looser: It’s a fact that you are looser and more limber in the evening.  Use your limberness for good instead of evil and go on an evening run.  You start off the run ready to get a great work out in.  Using the first 2 miles to wake up is for suckers.  You’re not a sucker are you?

Clears Your Head: There are so many things that go on during the day that we don’t stop to think about.  Often we go through the day putting out different fires and answering numerous emails but don’t ever stop and think about what we are doing.  How it may be effecting our corporation, business, or personal life?  Try running in the evening.  The mess of ideas and tasks will clear themselves up real quick.  You’ll probably come up with some new tasks and ideas too!  I personally can’t do run to clear my head because running is my job, so instead I just zone out in front to the TV to really clear my mind.  Preferably by watching Saved By the Bell.  You know how many ideas I’ve gotten from Zack’s crazy schemes?!

Evening Sun is Stronger: You probably work inside all day and need some sun.  Do your exercise when the sun is strongest and get an efficient suntan.  Now you’re leveraging the Sun!

More Energy: While you are sleeping you are not eating and gaining energy.  If you run in the evening you will have all of the energy you ate during the day to burn.  Better yet, you’ll be able to burn all that extra “energy” you had during the day too.

It’s Cool to Be Sweaty: It’s cool to show up places at night right after doing a run.  As long as you aren’t dripping sweat no one will care.  They’ll actually be a little impressed.  Impressed by your swag!

Makes you Cleaner: Running in the evening forces you most likely to shower twice a day.  Twice the cleaning the cleaner you will be.  Can’t we all use an extra shower a day?

So try running in the evenings, you may like it…

Running on a Team

Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009

I’ve heard someone tell me that they started running because they wanted to do something competitive after years of playing baseball.  Likewise, this past weekend a trail runner told me that he started running after years of playing competitive football (those two sports usually don’t go hand in hand) to be competitive, but still missed the team aspect he got from football.  I always think about running as an individual sport, me against myself, the course, and the other competitors.  How I perform is up to me.  No one else has anything to do with it.  Maybe that’s why I enjoy being entrepreneurial.  Entrepreneurial like a cheetah!

army-platoon

But what about running in a team?  Like the trail runner, I also miss being on a team, like when I was on the strongest team I’ve ever been on, my platoon while being deployed to Iraq.  Probably the strongest team ever put together.  So I thought about how I can make running be a team sport too.  Track and cross-country are both running team sports but they are mostly reserved for High School and College teams.  I then started researching and came across this relay, Ekiden Trail Running Race, near Atlanta with the tagline:  “It’s a relay race – It’s gonna be fun!”  Sounds like a perfect way to enjoy competitive running while also being a part of a team; not to mention running on a trail!  I think I’m going to have to look up local race results and make some phone calls…

Here are some benefits to running in on a team, relay or non-relay type:

Better Training:  When you are on a team and training together, everyone is forced to run as fast as the fastest runner.  During tempo runs and even training runs, the other runners on the team will try to keep up with the fastest runner no matter what, making the team faster as a whole.  See, you can be a part of a team while still improving yourself.  Trust me, there’s strength in numbers.  Speaking of which, join the National Trail Running Day Facebook page.

Communication: You learn a lot about communication when on a running team.  The batton hand off may be the most important aspect of running a relay and without communication it is often foiled.  Do not go without hearing the word “go” or it can be detrimental to your team.  Remeber, if you do not pass go, you will not collect 200 dollars.  I own Boardwalk yo!

Accountability:  I can’t say the word enough, accountability, accountability, accountability.  I just did that so in a google search for  “accountability” my name will come up.  Running on a team holds you accountablein all aspects of your training.  Unlike a running group keeping you accountable, the team relies on you, so everything you do or don’t do hurts them.  Just showing up isn’t enough.  Be a team player and be the face of accountability.  You’ll look as cool as me.

Build Teamwork Skills:  We all have to work in teams so any practice we can get is beneficial.  Unless you are like me and have attained the highest level in teamworking ability possible; leadership too, I’ve been told I do both of those perfectly and never have to improve those skills again for the rest of my life.  It’s pretty sweet.  Being on a running team takes a lot of discipline which may create more difficult team dynamics than your kickball team.  Weird.  You have to make sure you keep everyone actively involved and training how they are suppose to.  You may even have to leave a teammate behind if he/she can’t keep up, that’s the hardest thing to do as a teammate.

Social Skills:  Being on a team is a great way to make friends and bring prior friends closer together.  There is nothing better for building a relationship than having to rely on someone else.  Just watch Maurey Povich and you’ll find all kinds of people in relationships just because they have become reliant on each other.  Don’t over do it though, you’re still a runner and no one else can perform for you.

So join the team sport of running and experience a whole new aspect of running.
