How to Find the Perfect Running Shoes

new-balance-running-shoes-feet-on-head

I was emailed this picture of what looks to be a Bigfoot sighting.  It contained a link to this new advertisement for New Balance running shoes which I thought it was kind of funny.  The point New Balance is making is that you shouldn’t have to think about your feet while running.  The decision for the type of running shoes you prefer should be easy; however, we all know picking the perfect running shoes can be a daunting task sometimes.  The best way to find the perfect running shoes is to go to a running specialty store and try on as many pairs of shoes you can.  Even if you are loyal to one particular brand of running shoes, go and try out some other pairs.  There could be some better shoes out there that you didn’t even know about.  Most specialty running shoe stores will allow you to test run in the shoes and then give you advice on what type of running shoes seem to fit your running style.  You may know what feels good while running, but you don’t have eyes in the back of your head so having an expert examine you as you run is well worth it.  By utilizing this technique along with their experience, they are able to “hone” in on the perfect running shoe for you.  Kind of like a personal shopper!

If you live in the Atlanta area, a great running shoe store that will help you hone in on the perfect running shoe is Phidippides.  Most of the employees have been working there for over 10 years and it is owned by the World renowned running expert, Jeff Galloway.  Also Big Peach Running Company in Atlanta lets you take your shoes for a test run.

This is the end for END footwear Running Shoes

“This is the end.  Beautiful friend.  This is the end.  My only friend, the end.” – The Doors

end-foot

This is the end for END footwear according to SportsOneSource.com.  END (Enviromentally Nuetral Design) footwear has been discontinued by LaCrosse Footwear who purchased the END footwear brand this past June for 500,000 dollars.  LaCrosse plans to use the technology, resources, and capabilities into the Lacrosse and Danner product lines but discontinue the END brand.

END footwear’s goal was to provide normal athletes with high performance footwear through innovative design.  END footwear received honors for the Best Trail Running Shoe Debut and Best Road Running Shoe debut by Runner’s World in 2009; not that anyone cares what Runner’s World says.  I personally have never worn a pair of END running or trail running shoes but I have heard they are very different from most trail running shoes.  Here is what END footwear says about their trail running shoes:

“There’s a spiritual sense of oneness when you explore the outer mire. From dust to muck, the Stumptown collection comes to life in the land of filth with superior traction, stability, and confidence for extending the wilderness experience, urban wandering, or any other stress release you can invent.”

END footwear was a smaller company that was able to focus on what the customer needed in their revolutionary trail running products.  Apparently END footwear even got spiritual about their trail running shoes.  Even though LaCrosse will use a lot of the technologies and materials from the END brand, they will lose the culture that has been developed by END.  It looks like this is the END for this small, responsive shoe company with a huge passion for running.  The END.

Running a 10K for Beginners

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009

So I’ve developed some great training plans but someone I recently met, who is a walker but wants to get into running, said starting off with 2.5 miles for a 10K training plan was too much.  I mean, come on, that’s actually the second day of the training, the first day of the training plan is stretching!  After that you should be ready to run 2.5 miles right?!  Well, I have so much “swag” that I can admit when I make a mistake.  You should try it sometime Mr. Kayne “Swag” West.  Here at SeriousRunning.com we are for the people.  In order to make sure I needed to make a change, I got a larger sample size on Twitter to this question, ‘is 2.5 miles too much to start off for a beginning runner?’  All the tweets pretty much agreed it was too much.  Twit Nation has spoken.  I’ve brought down the “Beginner” 10K plan for the masses, so check it out.  However, before you take on the running challenge, listed below are some things you need to do before starting a training plan.  Like an old man, ease yourself into the warm bath of running.

slow-runners

Running Shoes: The right pair of running shoes is imperative for a new runner.  Your body is not used to the impact it gets from running; with the wrong pair of running shoes this impact could lead to an injury.  Go to a specialty running shoe store in your area and get “fitted” for the right pair of running shoes.  Make sure to go to a running shoe store where the employees watch you run in the shoes.  Everybody’s body mechanics are different and you need the perfect running shoes for you.

Walk: You need to walk before you can run, even toddlers know that.  Before starting a running training plan do some walking.  It will improve your cardiovascular system while also shedding excess pounds you have from not being active for so long.  Those excess pounds will make you more likely to get injured because of the extra weight “pounding” on your joints.

First 5 days: When you decide to start running you need to do it consistently in order to maintain the habit.  Make sure you do the first 5 days consecutively, no matter what other life conditions may occur.  Studies have shown that people who first start running and do it for 5 days in a row are much more likely to stick with it.

Eat Right: Beginning runners don’t necessarily need the same foods and nutrients that long distance, competitive runners do, but you do need to make sure you don’t eat junk.  I would consider junk to be anything fried, full of sugar, or fat.  A burger, fries, and a coke for lunch isn’t going to motivate you to go running that evening.  Make sure you eat things that will not stay with you for 24 hours and make you feel “sick” during your next run.

Stretch: Do many different stretches.  Here are some basic stretches to get you started.  Since your body is not used to the strenuous activity of running, it is important that you “wake it up” and get it ready for running.  Stretching directly after the run or anytime of the day will also help keep you loose.

If you do these five things you will like running, stick with it, and become a serious runner in no time.  Isn’t that what everyone wants to achieve anyway?  To be more like me.

Amazon.com to acquire Zappos.com: SeriousRunning.com even more Flexible to address Customers Needs!

amazoncom_logo

According to SportsOneSource.com, Amazon.com has reached an agreement to acquire Zappos.com.  The big just keep on getting bigger.  If they were real runners they would be getting smaller.  You know, because running burns calories and all.  However, the problem is that corporations are really not people.  It’s just a group of individuals who run an entity that is owned by many different people, whom most do not work for the company.  The people that work for these companies have marginal ownership from stock holdings, with not enough to give them incentive to work harder; unlike SeriousRunning.com which is a brother and brother business, with 100% incentive.  Do the math.  SeriousRunning.com is pretty much the ultimate business structure.  I’d let you see our business plan but it’s trademarked and copyrighted with a patent is pending, it’s that impressive.  Being such a small organization we are the decision makers, we are the ones that listen to what you want and are able to implement those things within minutes.  Even if Jeff Barber isn’t available because he is probably in the bathroom, out mountain biking, or painting his miniatures,  I will go ahead and make any change needed.  You know what that’s called?  Customer service.  Email Amazon.com or Zappos.com and see how long it takes for you to get a personalized response.  Email me chris@seriousrunning.com and I promise I will answer within 24 hours, and if during “business hours” I’ll probably answer within 20 minutes.  Take that behemoth running shoe selling companies!  We are able to travel just as fast on this Information Superhighway! Someone just leveled the playing field.

But the playing field isn’t level, Seriousrunning.com is far superior.  Why?  Because we answer our own questions, that’s why.  Also because the running shoe reviews on SeriousRunning.com are by serious runners, people who know how running shoes are suppose to perform.  Other websites like Amazon.com and Zappos.com have reviews, but you don’t know where they came from.  They could have come from a person who used the shoes for walking, skipping, or swatting flies.  Please be kind to your running shoes, they have feelings too.  The running shoe reviews on SeriousRunning.com are by runners for runners.  It’s a running community and as you can see, we love our running shoes.

Granted, our running shoe listings will take you to one of our affiliates’ websites, Amazon.com or REI.com, but that is because Amazon.com is the low price leader and REI.com is the outdoor product leader so we provide both to give you the best running shoes possible at the best price.  So why not go directly to those websites without passing through SeriousRunning.com’s running shoe reviews?  Because that’s two websites to search on instead of just one of course, but also mostly because we are the customer service leader for running shoes.  We provide the information you need and want.  Go ahead, give those 5 star rated shoes a try.  Fall in love with them, then come back to write your review.  When you are done with your review buy 10 more pairs to last you through the rest of the year.  Running shoe companies often come out with new versions annually so you may not have a chance to get another pair soon.  Be prepared, that’s what I like to say.

So while the big keep getting bigger, the real runners stay small and agile.  Ready for the gun to blast, the race to start, and are ready to give the best performance which you derserve.  We’re all about performance.

Note:  None of the members of the SeriousRunning.com’s staff take any type of performance enhancing drugs to help them provide all this great information on this awesome website.  I know what you were thinking, ‘They’ve got to be taking something…’  Incorrect.

Running Shoes for Two Different Sized Feet

different-size-running-shoes-and-feet

This is a question asked on the running forum that I thought I would share:

“After always buying cheap running shoes (but never having issues), I decided to go to the local running store and actually get fit for shoes. I’ve only ever run in Asics or Sauconys, but I got fitted with Brooks Adrenaline 9s. Every run I blister uncontrollably, but on my left foot only. I went back to the store and it turns out that my left foot is smaller than my right… so I’ve been wearing extra thick socks — nothing… the left foot still blisters really bad. I’ve heard that the Adrenaline 9s are very different from the 8s, but I never owned the 8s to begin with. What’s the best way to deal with this? Thick socks aren’t cutting it… should I buy a second pair in the smaller size and wear two different size running shoes? That sounds expensive… help!”

Wow, sounds like you are in desperate need of “help!”  Well, that’s what I’m here for, to help.  I mean, not using my expertise could create a moral hazard.  First off, I like that you went to your local running shoe store to try out some running shoes.  I recommend this for any runner who is unsure of what type of running shoes their feet need.  However, if you know what kind of shoes you need, I suggest using SeriousRunning.com to get the best prices and the largest selection of running shoes.  Too easy.  As far as the Brooks Adrenalines, I like them, but I’m hearing too many people say that their running shoe store has fitted them for these shoes.  I am beginning to wonder if Brooks is putting any incentives to running shoe stores to sell this brand.  I may need to do some investigative journalism, Wall Street Journal.

Thick socks are a great way to solve this problem but it sounds like you have a much larger difference in foot sizes for this solution.  One foot becomes larger because when we stand for long periods of time we often shift our weight back and forth, usually favoring one foot over the other.  This causes that foot to swell and flatten out more than the other foot.  If you want to stop this problem from occuring I suggest concentrating on where you shift your body weight when you stand and ease off your fat foot for a change.  You don’t have to buy two pairs of running shoes like the running shoe industry would like you to do.  Check out OddShoeFinder.com to get a matching pair of shoes plus great information for people like you.  See, everyone has a place on the Internet!  Isn’t it good to know that you don’t have to fight a fat foot problem alone!

As for the blisters, check out this article.  I actually am very blister prone so I have a lot of experience with them, but then again, I have a lot of experience with everything.  And whatever I lack in experience I compensate with my swagga.

Running Feet become Wider and Longer with Age

Wednesday, July 8th, 2009

Your feet aren’t like wine and get better with age.  And age is going to happen to your feet, aging happens to everyone.  Except me of course.  Just call me Chris De Leon, the more successful decent of Ponce.  For years people have been trying to curtail the aging process to no avail and your running feet are no different.  They are going to change with age and you need to be prepared to buy the right running shoe accordingly.

feet-on-funfetti-floor

No shoes no service?  Yeah right. Your feet have been servicing you for years and are tired.  Overtime feet become wider and longer because of joint changes, muscle and ligament changes, weight gain, and fluid retention.  As this happens you need to adjust the size of your running shoes accordingly, but even though size does matter, you should take other aspects of your running shoes into account.  For instance, with age your feet’s natural padding under your heal and forefoot thins, thus you need more cushioning and padding in your running shoes the older you become.  As well, your arches flatten the older you get, so running shoes with more arch support may be needed for your aging running feet.

If you continue to wear the same type of running shoes as your feet change with age you may develop bunions, calluses, or blisters.  A good way to avoid this from happening is to try on new running shoes about once a year before buying the same type of running shoes over and over.  To ensure you get the right fit make sure you try on shoes later in the day as your foot expands during the day.  Also, make sure you fit your largest foot, not all feet are created equal.

I know you’ll continue to run as you get older but your feet don’t have to feel old.  Make sure you continue to wear the right pair of running shoes for your feet.  You’ll save on quarters that you would have had to give your grandchildren for foot rubs.  Keep those quaters for the pay phones grandpa!

Saucony Progrid Xodus Trail Running Shoe Review

Monday, June 29th, 2009

I got a pair of the Saucony Progrid Xodus Trail Running Shoes this past week and took them on the trail Sunday morning to try them out.  I had already worn them for a couple of days around town and at the house to break them in; although I’m not sure if I even needed to, they felt snug and cushioned as soon as I put them on, and this was after I had been wearing my road running shoes!  A trail running shoe that feels better on my foot than a road running shoe?  I didn’t buy it, so I had to test it.

saucony-progrid-xodus-trail-running-shoes

I went on a 6 mile road run before hitting the trails, 5 miles in my road running shoes and then one mile in the Saucony Progrid Xodus Trail Running Shoes to see if this fit and comfort level really did compare on the road.  I found that the Progrid Xodus provided the same cushioning, support, and lightweight-ed-ness as my road running shoes but with the biggest difference coming from the Vibram Trek Outsole which is made specifically for the trail.  These running shoes are strong enough for the road, but PH balanced just for the trail.

The first thing I liked about these shoes when I put them on was their tight fit.  It is very unusual for me to get a perfect fit out of the box (no pun-intended).  I have normal width feet but most running shoes still feel too loose to me when I first lace them up.  It usually takes me 5 or 6 runs until my running shoes feel snug enough when I lace them up, but not with the Saucony Progrid Xodus Trail Running Shoe.  You get the tight upper fit because of the Arch-Lock technology that provides a snug midfoot upon first lacing.  Even with this tight fit, I still pulled the laces as tight as I could and tied them off.  As soon as I tied my double knot I noticed how tight the knot was.  It was like the laces were wedging against each other for an extra tightness, or maybe the bumblebee pattern made it look tight, either way, these shoe laces were not coming loose and I looked “tight” in these bad boys.  I’m just glad I was able to run fast enough to avoid being mistakenly cross pollinated with by a bumble bee.  I imagine that would hurt.

I also really like how lightweight the shoes are.  The Sockliner makes the shoes feel extra lightweight and is breathable with a moisture wicking anti-odor and anti-microbial insolses with rebound properties.  I got them pretty wet from water crossings and about 3 gallons of my sweat that rolled down my legs into these shoes.  They seemed to dry pretty quickly but I still left them outside to dry out a bit more.  It’s been less than 24 hours so I’ve yet to see how well the rebound properties really are.  With my amount of sweat, these shoes will need to be able to rebound like Charles Barkely or Dikembe Mutumbo to feel and smell like new again.

With the Saucony Progrid Xodus Trail Running Shoes’ lightweight and comfort I was a little concerned that Saucony skimped on the durability, but I didn’t find this to be the case.  The shoe gave a smooth ride on the trail with a good response to the uneven terrain.  These are my first Progrid style running shoes but I found that they were able to absorb the impact and dissipate the shock which set my feet up for a great transitions.  Speaking of great transitions…

saucony-progrid-xodus-trail-running-shoe-vibram-sole

…the picture above is the Vibram Trek Outsole which is why the Saucony Progrid Xodus feels good enough for the roads but are perfect for the trails.  The Vibram sole feels like a rubbery/plastic material (it’s a shoescientist term, don’t worry if you don’t understand) that has a lot of teeth for grip but they are far enough apart that you don’t have to carry the trail with you on your run.  It’s material and pattern make it a lightwieght sole which does not compromise the grip, traction, or durability.  Brilliant!  This is why I think Saucony got this shoe right, they focused on the most important part of a trail running shoe, the sole.

You too need to improve you’re most important part, you’re soul, and get our there and trail run.  And if you want to get serious about trail running and want a shoe that feels as comfortable as your road running shoes, then this is the shoe for you.  Click here for more information on this awesome trail running shoe.

Buying Running Shoes at your Local Running Shoe Store

Friday, June 12th, 2009

Buying running shoes at your local running shoe store is silly.  Why would you do something like that?  All you have to do is go to a sweet website like SeriousRunning.com, while sitting at home in your underwear, and read the reviews of other runners to help you decide which pair of running shoes you want to buy, at a competitively cheap price nonetheless.  I mean, seriously, each person reacts to a pair of running shoes the same right?  Well, I wish that were true, but guess what, one size does not fit all when it comes to running shoes.  If you don’t know anything about what type of runner you are, what type of running shoes you prefer to wear, or have been injured because of your running shoes, then I suggest you go to your local running shoe store and try out as many pairs of running shoes as you can.  That’s how much SeriousRunning.com is here for you.  We’ll even tell you to go patron somewhere else if we feel like you will get a better value out of it.  For instance, if you are looking for a cool camping website or cool mountain biking website then go to those links.  See, it’s not that hard.  We do it all the time.

trying-on-running-shoes-phidippides

I wouldn’t tell you to check out your local running shoe store without checking out mine here in Atlanta, Phidippides.  It’s a really great running shoe store that Jeff Galloway built back in 1975 when running shoe specific stores weren’t cool yet.  What a trend setter.  Actually, Mr. Jeff Galloway will be at the Ansley Mall location tomorrow morning at 7:30 to run part of the Peachtree Road Race route.  A chance to run part of the largest 10K in the World’s route with one of the former winners, that’s enough to get me going early on a Saturday morning!  If that’s not enough for you to wake up for then please go to http://www.notreallythatseriousrunning.com.  Or just show up tomorrow morning anyway for the free giveaways and after the event maybe you’ll be inspired to take running more seriously…dot com.

So what did I learn from going to Phidippides?  A lot.  I know, you thought I knew everything, and quite honestly, I did too, but it turns out I don’t.  I was taught about running shoes from a couple of different employees there, Gregory, Ron, and Kevin, who were all more than helpful in providing me with some excellent knowledge and great customer service.  So what makes a running shoe store like Phidippides so special?  It’s this expert knowledge that each employee has, being deeply involved in their craft.  So how do you get some of their knowledge?  By going through their Evaluation Process.  Don’t worry, everyone passes.

When a customer first comes in the store the employees ask, “What are you looking for?”  This is a great question because even though it is a running shoe store there were many types of runners in their like the High School cross-country runner, the somewhat out of shape couple looking to get back into running together, and the grocery store employee who was having knee problems from standing all day.  So once the staff member determines what type of shoe you are looking for, which also helps them to understand your running knowledge and running shoe experience, they put you in a neutral shoe and watch you run, focusing on your foot strike.  They don’t have any fancy cameras, treadmills, or water.  Well, they do have fancy water, but it’s for sale in a bottle.  They also have calibrated eyes and motion sensors in their brain.  They take the information they learn from watching you run and decide which category fits your running style, Core, Versatility, Core Support, Stability, or Stability II.  They also carry footwear in the Performance, Trail, Performance Support, Racing Flats, and even Orthopedic Sandals categories so they’ve got everything you would need from a running shoe store.  Here’s the thing about their categories though, the staff members don’t feel confined to them.  They are free to pick and choose the right pair specifically for you without being locked in to one specific category.  Finally someone realizes just how dynamic you really are!  The staff members watch you run in every pair of running shoe you try on and modify the type ever so slightly each time in order to find the shoe that fits best to your running style.  I honestly would go in there and try on whatever the staff member told me to, and then buy whichever running shoe he/she said fit me best without even questioning it.  The staff members I talked to had about 20 years experience selling running shoes, one specifically at Phidippides!  That’s over a million people he has watched run.  Trust me, I did the math.  However, you don’t have to go with exactly their expert advice, they do let you decide based on what you feel when running in the shoes, but they probably would make an objection if you decided to buy a pair of running shoes based solely on looks.  Sorry Paris Hilton, but it’s still hot.

Some other services Phidippides provides that your local running shoe store may as well, is the 30 minute indoor service.  After you purchase your shoes you can run in them for 30 minutes indoors on a treadmill or indoor track and still take them back for a full refund if you aren’t satisfied.  That’s like 6 miles!  Ok, maybe like 5.  Another cool thing I saw them do was modify the inserts.  The staff members would cut felt and mold an insert specific to what the customer needed.  Remember what I said about one size doesn’t fit all for running shoes.  I wasn’t lieing.  Also, after asking about a category discrepancy I had, they told me about how the staff members work closely with shoe companies, testing out new products and giving them feedback about whether the running shoes performs the way it was intended to.  If a shoe doesn’t perform the way the running shoe company says it should the Phidippides staff either re-classify it or stop carrying the running shoe entirely.  Going head on with the shoe-scientists at major running shoe manufacturers.  What authority!

I know, not everyone has such an established, successful, helpful running shoe store near them like I do, but if you want to try on your running shoes instead of, or before purchasing them online, then go to a local running shoe store.  To help, check out our listing of running shoe stores and see if there is one near you.  Review it and tell other runners where the best place to buy running shoes is…other than on SeriousRunning.com of course.

Mizuno Wave Inspire 4 Running Shoe Review

Thursday, May 28th, 2009

I recently got a new pair of running shoes, the Mizuno Wave Inspire 4s and I love them.  Why didn’t I get the Mizuno Wave Inspire 5s?  Because it’s a bad economy.  I know, 5 is higher than 4; therefore, better.  But I don’t think there is much of a difference between these versions of running shoes; just minor changes that aren’t worth the price difference to me.  Didn’t you know it’s cool to be cheap these days?  It’s also cool to be retro.  Double cool points.

double-side-view-resize

I was a New Balance guy when I was in High School running track and cross-country.  Then I was a Nike dude when I was running in the Army.  After the Army I got more serious about my running (pun intended, why is everyone unintending puns?  Puns are great!) I was a Brooks runner.  Now I’m a Mizuno man and I feel great about it.  The Mizuno Wave Inspire 4s are a great stability running shoe with more cushioning than other stability shoes I have worn.  They seem to be built wider than normal running shoes which isn’t an issue because I find that over time shoes narrow and mold to my feet.  To help this process I add my own, shorter shoe laces (see picture above) to all of my new running shoes.  Check out my research on why running shoe laces have become so long.  I’m a running shoeientist.  Although these shoes are a bit loose, my heal does have a snug fit in the Mizuno Wave Inspire 4s because of the stretchy fabric to the upper, in front of the heel counter which helps isolate the ankle’s outward motion.  This seems to curtail my overpronation some.  I’m always doing things in excess.  I also like the cushioning in the heel which is due to the VS-1 shock-absorbing cushioning compound.  The Mizuno Wave Inspire 4 has a medium arch which seems to be right for me but I don’t pay as much attention to my arch as I should.  The only negative aspect I have found with my Mizuno Wave Inspire 4s is that the tongue seems to be too narrow and folds under the edges sometimes.  You just have to be aware of it and make sure you don’t let it start rubbing your foot.  Much like a male canine.

So what’s the moral to this story? The Mizuno Wave Inspire 4s are pretty legit and you should buy them.  That, and that you should keep trying different running shoes until you find the best one that fits you at the time.  It’s OK to change up the type of running shoes you wear.  It’s good to keep your body guessing.  Don’t you want your body to stay interested in running?  Stay mysterious.  Soon your body will be eating out of your hands…wait…

Trail Running Shoes Versus Road Running Shoes

Wednesday, May 13th, 2009

What’s the difference?  They’re both running shoes.  My brother wears trail running shoes both on the trails and on the road.  That doesn’t make it right though.  There are some types of running shoes that are in between the characteristics of a trail running and a road running shoe; they can run both ways.  There’s nothing wrong with that.  These type of shoes are so enlightened.

trail-running-vs-resize

If you run 20 miles a week or more, then you need to wear the correct shoe for the terrain you will be running on.   Trail Running shoes are built to be more rugged, like your chiseled facial features.  For instance, the soles are more rugged to not give way when you step on the roots or rocks.  Stepping on a root directly in the middle of your foot can cause serious injury, I’m not a podiatrist but I do use my feet a lot.  The toes in trail running shoes are reinforced to give extra protection from hard objects that may stub your toes.  Rocks are always getting in the way.  This extra protection lends trail running shoes to be generally heavier.  However, just like road running shoes you can buy trail running shoes that are built for performance, thus lighter, or you can go for a heavier shoe to control your pronation and give you extra protection.  Or you can buy some trail running shoes that are like me:  built for speed, but made for comfort.  You know it!

Trail Running shoes are also have different traction than road running shoes.  There are many different types of terrain and conditions you may encounter on a trail and you will need more traction.  Also, the treads on the bottom are built to prevent rocks from getting caught and to whisk mud away so it doesn’t stick to your shoes.  Stop giving mud a free ride.

Trail Running shoes are also typically more breathable and water proof.  When trail running most of the time you want to run straight through puddles and sometimes have to cross major streams.  You don’t want to run in soggy shoe for the rest of the trail so trail running shoes are built to dry quicker than road running shoes.  It feels really good to dry out.

Those are some of the major difference between trail running and road running shoes.  You can wear road running shoes on the trail, just like you can wear jean shorts to a wedding, but I wouldn’t recommend it; unless it is a wedding for University of Georgia graduate.  Then you may be a little overdressed.
